Supreme Court Decision
June 29, 2013
Dear Family & Friends,
Yesterday’s announcement by the Supreme Court is but a HUGE tip of an iceberg in our land of a moral vacuum that began long before the more modern push to legalize homosexuality. Marriage has been under attack for ages in our land, and not solely from the “outside.” Too many preachers have been too silent when it comes to issues surrounding marriage and its very foundation: creation. When Jesus was challenged concerning marriage and divorce, what did He do? He referred them to the creation account and said that Moses allowed divorce because of their “hardness of heart”!
“And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.” (Matthew 19:4-8)
We’ve allowed hard-hearted “theologians” to lie to us about marriage, telling us even that God sanctions divorce in certain cases! A pastor in WV once let me borrow books on these subjects, one of which was by noted author and counselor, Jay Adams. I will never forget this false teacher at one point using Jeremiah 3:8 to assert that even “God is divorced” (!). What we see happening in our culture and government today is the end result of the failure of preachers all across our land. We separate over Bible texts, music, dress, and “college cliques,” all the while ignoring the “600 pound gorilla in the room” that is the ongoing devaluing of the first human institution that God created: marriage. As His Word says, “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God…” (1 Peter 4:17). May we repent of our sin against God, our silence, and our rebellion against HIS design! Let us humbly admit our moral need before Him. For many who are in situations beyond their control, or who have a past fraught with conflict in these areas, please remember that God is in control and has a perfect plan. Confess or commit the past to Him, and go on from here resolved to do right in HIS sight and according to HIS design, committed to instill in the next generation the fact that marriage was designed by God for one man and one woman who come together for a life-long commitment as one flesh. Anything that contradicts this design is rebellion and hard-heartedness, according to Jesus, the Creator and Maker of marriage. May God help us to make a difference in our nation one person at a time!
