The shooting in the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado is a real tragedy and our hearts go out to the families that were affected. I pray that God will draw them to Himself and therein give them peace in this time of storm.
One television personality, didn’t get her name, ask some religious leaders where was God and why didn’t He stop this from happening? I am sure that many are asking these same questions.
I want to offer my answer to these questions, but before I do let me say that the man who did this is responsible for his actions. Although society may have caused an atmosphere that allows things like this to happen, society did not make him do it. It was an act that came out of his wicked heart (Jeremiah 17:9) and a decision he made of his own free will. If he is found to be insane his is still guilty. The plea of “not guilty by reason of insanity” is never true. If he did it he is guilty. Insanity may mitigate the penalty, but he is guilty. Let us learn to use words correctly.
God has spelled out His answer in Romans Chapter 1:
“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” (Romans 1:19-32)
I will not take time to comment on everything in this passage, but there are a couple of things that need to be pointed out.
The proof of God’s existence and power is seen everywhere in creation for those with opened eyes and honest hearts. We are told that all of creation is but an accident, or a series of accidents, in the evolutionary process. We are told this with absolutely no evidence to back it up. The fossil record gives no evidence for evolution. As a matter of fact, the fossil record supports special creation.
The laws of science give no evidence because the basic laws teach that things become less and less organize as time passes. If you put all the materials necessary to build a house in a field and leave them alone they will never become a house no matter how many times they are struck by lightning. Instead of becoming a house they will return to the earth from which they were made.
How does this relate to the incident in Colorado? We are teaching our children that we are just evolved animals and that there are no absolute rules to live by. Should we be surprised that they act like animals and disobey the rules of society?
The second thing I would like to point out is that we, as a nation, have turned our back on God and refuse to give Him the honor He deserves. We reject His precepts thinking we know better than He does. We have become a nation that calls evil good and good evil. Those who stand for righteousness are demonized and those who stand for debauchery (look the word of up you don’t know what it means) are praised.
God’s response is to turn those who reject Him over to a reprobate mind. This is a mind that is morally unprincipled. It is a mind that is incapable of making right decisions because it is so given over to lusts. God doesn’t make them reprobate, He turns them over to there mind which is already reprobate.
So, why does God allow things like what happened at the theater in Aurora Friday? The answer is not difficult to see by those who want a real answer.
We, as a nation, have told God that we don’t need Him and we don’t want Him involved in our affairs. How foolish is it for a nation that rejects God to expect God’s help when trouble comes?
John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” [Adams, Charles Francis, ed. “The Works of John Adams, Second President of the United States: Volume IX.” Boston: Little, Brown, 1854, p. 229.]
To the founding fathers, religion was necessary to restrain the people from their selfish lusts. The solution is not more gun control laws. The solution is not less video games and violence in movies (although less of these would probably be good things). The solution is to allow God back into our schools and public life. I don’t want to see an established religion, like Baptist or Episcopalian, or the like. I just want to see our Creator receive His due honor. We gave Him that honor for most of our history, but now we have turned on Him.
The more we push God out of our national and public life, the more evil things we can expect to see.
Galatians 6:7-8 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”
If we have sown the wind and are reaping the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7). Things will not get better until we turn back to God!
